Webache #1 – No confirmation your comment was submitted
What do you call something on the Interwebs that makes your head hurt? I call it a “web ache” (as opposed to a head ache or a tooth ache – but possibly still as painful sometimes).
I’m going to start posting my Webaches here – in the order that I encounter them over the following months.
And that brings me to the webache I had just now – one that’s hit me a few times this past week.
I left a comment on a blog post, and I hit the ‘Submit’ button – and then my comment disappeared into thin air.
Normally when I comment on a blog, I either see my comment has been added after all the other comments, or I have a ‘Your comment is being held for moderation’ message.
But, I’ve noticed a few blogs lately just don’t give any indication of whether the system safely received your comment – or if something bad happened and it got, um, comment-napped in the process.
So what do I do? Do I assume it’s being moderated (since it’s the first time I commented there) or do I try to rewrite it and send it again? What a pain!
Action step
Do you have a blog? If so, make sure you’re not logged in, and try to submit a comment using a fake email address (you can delete your fake comment later). Test it out as though it was your first time visiting your blog. Now, what happens when you submit your comment? Do you know what happened to it, or are you left with a webache?
If you find a black hole in the process and need help, or if you have any other questions or comments, please comment below…
